A Trip Down Siewick Drive
Have you ever wondered about the origin of the name Joseph Siewick Drive, the street in front of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital? It was named after Dr. Joseph Siewick, who passed away in 1984. Dr. Siewick was a physician dedicated to the care of our community who helped make our current hospital possible.
I mention this because we are in the midst of our 25th anniversary year. And there are many milestones to reminisce about. Over the past quarter-century, we have seen a community hospital grow into a recognized regional hospital with highly respected specialists, departments and care.
And as you will see in our main feature story, our care and expertise is complemented by the longtime friendships and memories that our staff remembers and cherishes. It’s true that the expert care that we offer and our many nationally recognized physicians make us one of the best hospitals in the area. But it’s the people who really make this hospital special. We haven’t lost touch of the feeling that everyone is a VIP here — a Very Important Patient.
Our Shared Beliefs here at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital include compassion, respect, excellence, dedication, innovation and trust. As I look back on the care we’ve provided to our community over the past 25 years, I think Dr. Siewick would be proud.

Stay active: Having weak legs or
poor balance makes it more likely
you will fall. Keeping your bones
healthy with exercise and healthy
eating can also reduce your risk of
fracture if you fall. Always be sure
to talk with your doctor before you
begin any new exercises.
- Know your medications: Tell your
doctor if your medications, including
over-the-counter remedies or
herbal supplements, make you
dizzy or drowsy.
- Get your vision checked regularly:
It is hard to get around safely if you
can’t see well. Visit your eye doctor
every year, and make sure your
glasses and/or contact lenses are
the correct strength.
- Keep your home safe: Clutter, poor
lighting or small rugs can cause
falls. Use non-slip mats under your
area and bathroom rugs. Use
curtains or shades to reduce glare.
Use brighter light bulbs or more lights.
- Wear good shoes: Always wear sturdy shoes, even when you are at home. Sneakers are a good choice. Make sure they have non-slip soles. Avoid going barefoot or just wearing slippers or socks.

Golf and Tennis Classic for Hospital to be Held in September
This September, there’s a good reason to hit the fairway — the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital’s Annual Golf and Tennis Classic! Proceeds benefit the future Radiation Oncology and Cancer Center at the hospital.
“We are, at heart, a community hospital — one that has generated much love and loyalty from the friends and neighbors we have cared for over the years,” offers Kate Sims, Director of Leadership Giving for the hospital. “And we are a not-for-profit hospital, which means that every dollar we earn is reinvested back into the healthcare needs in our community.”
The Golf and Tennis Classic will be held on Monday, Sept. 24, at the International Country Club. Register early. Space is limited. To print the registration form, click here. For more information or for sponsorship opportunities, contact Kate Sims at 703-391-4810 or email her at kate.sims@inova.org.
