That Pain in the Back

Our backs can be the source of plenty of discomfort. Whether
it’s an injury resulting in a slipped disc, age-related arthritis
or chronic lower back pain, our backs often cause us more problems than they should.

Inova Spine Institute sees thousands of patients each year
with neck and back problems. Our goal is to help each one
understand the resources available, inform them of treatment
options and direct them to the most appropriate specialist.
The process begins like this: Once you let us know you have
a problem, a spine care expert will review your condition at
an Inova Spine Assessment Center or over the phone. Our doctors, nurses and clinical specialists will make sure you
have the proper diagnosis.

Typically, most spine and neck problems resolve themselves
with conservative treatments. But for those rare cases that
require surgery, our neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine
surgeons will provide the most appropriate surgery using the
latest technology. We will also make sure you receive the
rehab you need for optimal recovery. Treatment paradigms
and technology certainly have improved over the years.

Not Your Ordinary Ambulance
Vehicle Geared for Transport of Children, Babies

Pediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Transport Ambulance

A new pediatric critical care transport ambulance at Inova will allow sick babies, children and parents in the region to receive intensive care in a mobile setting.

The only vehicle of its kind in the region, the four-door Pediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Transport Ambulance contains specialized care capabilities, including an on-board lab, large amounts of oxygen and medical air, and a generator. Its large size — 31 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11 feet tall — allows for the transport of two children or a mother and a child with complex conditions. The ambulance will be based at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

The vehicle was purchased by Physicians Transport Service and the Auxiliary of Inova Fairfax Hospital, notes Heather Russell, RN, MS, FABC, Administrator, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
The reason for the purchase was “to provide state-of-the-art transportation for the pediatric patient population across the region,” she says.

The vehicle began doing specialty pediatric transports in January. A nurse, paramedic and respiratory therapist accompany the EMT driver.

Operation Women’s Cancer
Women’s Health Integrated Research Center Studies Gynecologic Disease

Test tubes

A research center at Inova is dedicated to the study of gynecologic cancer.

The Women’s Health Integrated Research Center, a 6,000-square-foot laboratory, represents a partnership between the Department of Defense and Inova. Here, uniformed trainees in gynecologic cancer from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center undergo part of their fellowship training. Investigators from Inova and Walter Reed work with the trainees and a team of scientists to perform their research.

The Center helps the trainees become adept in molecular biology, specifically genomics and proteomics. That area of research is key as healthcare moves toward personalized medicine, explains G. Larry Maxwell, MD, Chairman of the Department of OB-GYN at Inova Fairfax Hospital Women’s Center.

“What we’re doing is on the cutting edge of being able to improve our understanding of the molecular alterations that characterize gynecologic cancers,” he says. “Once we understand the tumor and process in a more detailed and more accurate way, it allows us to either guide the way we treat people today or provide targets for preventive or therapeutic options for the future.”

It’s Genetic
The Inova Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI) works with the Women’s Health Integrated Research Center on research into genomics and proteomics (the analysis of proteins). Together, they investigate perinatal diseases and maternal-fetal health. Learn more about the groundbreaking research being conducted at the ITMI here.

Get on the Bus
‘Heart Beat’ Bus Brings Screenings Closer to Home

‘Heart Beat’ bus
Inova’s Heart and Vascular Institute has partnered with HealthFair USA, the only mobile health screening company accredited by The Joint Commission, to bring heart and vascular screenings to you. The new Mobile Heart and Vascular Screening bus (the “Heart Beat” bus) is visiting communities throughout Northern Virginia to provide high-quality, comprehensive tests to check for potential conditions such as peripheral artery disease, heart attack, stroke and aneurysms.

“Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD is a common, yet serious disease found in approximately 9 million Americans in which the arteries that carry blood to the legs or arms become narrowed or clogged,” explains David Spinosa, MD, Medical Director of The Vascular Program at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. “This interferes with the normal flow of blood, sometimes causing pain, but often causing no symptoms at all. More importantly, PAD is frequently a warning that there is also abnormal narrowing of blood vessels to the heart and brain which can lead to heart attack and stroke.”
