Surgeon Returns to Work at Health System Where He Was Born
Orthopedic surgeon Nitin Goyal, MD, may be considered a "local boy made good." The new surgeon practicing at the Inova Joint Replacement Center at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital has returned to the health system where he was born and volunteered as a teenager.
"It's exciting to be back and have the opportunity to treat patients in the community where I grew up," says Dr. Goyal, who was born at Inova Fairfax Hospital and served as a candy striper there while he was in high school. "I always looked up to my pediatrician and the doctors I interacted with at Inova Fairfax Hospital."
Now, young candy stripers can look up to Dr. Goyal, who completed his residency and fellowship at the prestigious Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Goyal pursued specialized training in complex hip and knee reconstruction there. His surgical interests include computer navigation for partial and total knee replacement, revision surgery for infection, and treatment of hip pain in the younger adult population. Since joining the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic and practicing at the Inova Joint Replacement Center, he has performed the innovative muscle-sparing anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty. William Hamilton, MD, another Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Clinic physician, also performs this procedure.

"I wanted to come back to the
area, and Anderson is well-
known at institutions around
the country for hip and knee
replacement — both for
research and clinical practice,"
he says. Dr. Goyal, who grew up
in Great Falls, Va., comes from
a family of physicians. His sister,
Shalini Kaneriya, is an internist
at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. His
brother, Sharad, is a radiation
oncologist in New York. Their
parents still live in Great Falls.
Now that he has picked a spot
to settle down, Dr. Goyal is
looking for a home in the
Alexandria area with his wife,
Rachna. They enjoy going to
Georgetown and Old Town
Alexandria and love to travel.
They visited Tuscany last summer and plan to go to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe in February. When he is not operating, you may find Dr. Goyal hiking and running in Great Falls Park. He also likes to play tennis and is a big hockey fan (he roots for the Washington Capitals, of course).
Besides continuing to do research to improve joint replacement and taking care of people in the area, Dr. Goyal is excited to train the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.
He has no plans to leave his hometown again.
