Project 2010 Introduces New Labs, Post-Surgical Center

Emergency Department

Expanded Emergency Department

If you have visited Inova Alexandria Hospital lately, you will have seen lots of structural improvements. This is thanks to Project 2010, an expansion project to enhance the existing services and improve patient access. Highlights of the five-year, $84 million initiative include five state-of-the-art procedure labs in the Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology Department and construction of the Twig Surgical Center, a new unit with 24 rooms dedicated to the care of post-surgical patients. (See more about the Twig unit on opposite page.) Construction of the labs was completed in April, while the Twig unit was unveiled in November.

"Project 2010 represents a step forward in addressing our changing community's needs," says Christine M. Candio, Chief Executive Officer of Inova Alexandria Hospital. "We are thrilled to offer upgraded technology and services to continue to provide the high standard of care we have maintained over the last 100-plus years."

The new construction adds approximately 68,000 square feet of floor space on three floors, two of which are above ground. The hospital opted to enhance and expand its facility because of the growth of its aging community. In 2010, one out of four Alexandria residents was age 55 or older.

Phase 1 of Project 2010 was completed at the end of 2009. It included eight additional beds in the newly expanded Emergency Department, two new operating rooms in Surgical Services, redesigned ambulatory and recovery spaces in same-day services to give patients more privacy, and state-of-the-art computer automation in an expanded pathology laboratory.

The project has been going on for five years, notes Mary Myers, Director of the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation. The Foundation raised $25 million — roughly one-third of the $84 million price tag. "The hospital is 139 years old, and it's quite remarkable and expected that the community was so willing to participate in our fundraising efforts to build Project 2010," she says.
