The Inova Advanced Imaging Center Is Now Open — and Taking Patients

Starting this month,patients have a new place to receive mammograms, CT scans and other radiology services. It is the new Inova Advanced Imaging Center, a service of Inova Alexandria Hospital — the only dedicated outpatient radiology center in the city.

"I'm excited to have this center dedicated to Alexandria to better serve the local community," says Tammy Lamb, MD, Medical Director of the Center.

Having all radiology services in an outpatient location will make navigation easier for patients. In particular, patients with the Inova Internal Medicine Group, which is located in the building, will have easy access to imaging services.

"Patients will benefit from having these services available at an outpatient location," notes Frank Scherf, Director of Radiology at Inova Alexandria Hospital. "With more appointments available and an easy location, it's a convenient option."

Besides the easy access to services, a major highlight of the Center is the cutting-edge technology. This includes a new 128 Slice CT scanner — the only one available at Inova Health System — as well as diagnostic X-ray and ultrasound. A 3 Tesla MRI — the most current, high-field strength magnet — is expected to come soon. "The CT scanner and MRI are levels of technology the hospital doesn't offer," Scherf point outs.

Women's imaging includes digital mammography, a DEXA scan to determine bone mass, stereotactic biopsy and ultrasound.
Dr. Lamb is thrilled that all breast imaging and other women's services will be at one location. She is also pleased that Sara Bruce, MD, breast surgeon, will be on-site. "I wanted to have 'one-stop shopping' for women to have all their needs taken care of in a convenient, accessible setting," she says.

Women will be able to receive mammograms, bone-evaluation scans and eventually cardiac imaging — all in one location.
"We'll be able to offer everything in one setting," she says. "Hopefully, that's where they'll come for a general workup."
