A Numbers Game

What is in a number? Take, for example, 124. That is the number of minutes, on average, it takes for a complete visit, from registration to discharge, in the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital emergency room. That is 124 minutes from start to stop to receive excellent care in a time of need.

Over the past two years, the emergency department team embarked on a mission to improve the care it provides to the community by reducing the amount of time it takes to see a physician. (Read more about it on page 5.) They used a "Lean" improvement methodology, an approach used by
many internationally famous manufacturing organizations. It
worked. At the beginning of the effort the average time for a
complete visit was well over 200 minutes. Satisfaction among patients was stuck in the 30th percentile and 5 percent of
the patients coming to visit the emergency room left without
being seen. Now satisfaction is close to the 90th percentile
and patients leaving before being seen are less than 0.4
percent.

What is in a number? Great team work, innovation and great
care. That is what you can expect if you find it necessary to
visit our emergency department. The team is still working to
make improvements and the numbers keep getting better …
for the patient.

Don't Let a Heavy Backpack Weigh Down Your Child

Students should study hard. Still, they should not to have to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, so to speak.

While useful tools, when backpacks are too heavy, they can cause back pain and poor posture. Children should not carry any more than 10 to 15 percent of their body weight. Here are some things to look for in a backpack: a lightweight pack that doesn't add a lot of weight to your child's load; two, wide, padded shoulder straps; a padded back; a waist belt; and multiple compartments.

Also make sure that your kids do not carry unnecessary items to school, such as video games or books they don't need. Teach them to use both shoulder straps, as using only one can be damaging to the back and to their posture.

SunscreenFun in the Sun
We Can Still Enjoy the Rays if We Take Proper Precautions

After months of gray, cold days,
it's hard to resist the temptation
of a bright, hot summer sun. But
if we are not careful, excessive
exposure to it can hurt our skin
and our health.

To avoid the sun's harmful rays,
generously apply sunscreen. Put
it on about 20 minutes before
heading outside so your skin can
absorb it. Sunscreen should have
a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of
at least 30 and provide protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating. Our eyes need protection as well, so wear sunglasses.

Another risk of staying in the sun is sunstroke, a result of excessive exposure to the sun's heat. Dehydration and prolonged exposure to the sun contribute to sunstroke. As a result, if you are outside for any length of time, make sure to drink plenty of water. The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to avoid being outside for prolonged periods during this time.
