Baby Talk

I'm thrilled to introduce you to our maternity services and hope that you'll choose our facility as the place to deliver your baby. There is no other experience in life so special!

The OB/GYN physicians who deliver their patients' babies at our Women's Center have chosen to practice here because of their top-notch colleagues. They trust that any specialist they might need is here to assist them.

Our labor and delivery nurses are here to support you and your partner from the moment you arrive. Our family-centered care staff will settle you into a private room and guide your recovery, while introducing you and your family to the care of your newborn.

In addition to the many normal deliveries performed at the Center each year, there are others that require coordination among our maternal-fetal medicine physicians, highly trained nurses and sonographers. We have the largest and most advanced NICU in the area.

So if you are pregnant or thinking about having a baby, let us help you find an OB/GYN physician who practices at Inova Fairfax Hospital Women's Center. We will be waiting to share that special "birth day" with you and your family.

Take Precautions in the Sun and Water

Two of the best parts of summer are the long, bright days and the water activities. But if you are not careful, excessive sun exposure or a pool accident can quickly dampen the summer spirit. To ensure fun all season long, consider the following recommendations from Robert Silverman, MD, at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

Generously apply sunscreen when heading outside, he says. Put it on about 20 minutes before going out so your skin can absorb it. Sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 and provide protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating. Our eyes need protection as well, so wear sunglasses, Silverman suggests.

Also, if you are outside for any length of time, be sure to drink plenty of water. The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to avoid being outside for prolonged periods during this time.

Water Precautions

If your children are around water at a pool or beach, an adult should always be watching. Kids should also know not to dive into an unfamiliar area. The water might be shallow or there may be rocks.

While boating or jet skiing, make sure that everyone, regardless of his or her swimming skill, wears a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Keep in mind that an adult-sized life jacket will not work for a child. Before heading out on a boat, tell someone on land. Check the weather report for unexpected conditions.

Once you know that you and your family will be safe outdoors, you can enjoy the season — worry-free.

Heartburn May Lead to More Serious Condition
We’ve Got You Covered

Men

Up to 60 percent of adults experience mild to moderate heartburn, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This common condition is usually treatable with lifestyle changes, medications and avoiding certain foods. However, frequent or severe heartburn may lead to serious complications and should definitely be evaluated by a specialist.

Untreated, GERD can cause pre-cancerous cells to develop in the esophagus. This condition, called Barrett's esophagus, affects more than three million Americans over age 50, and greatly increases the risk for cancer of the esophagus.

Fortunately, advanced treatment is now available to significantly reduce these odds. The Center for Advanced Endoscopy at Inova Fairfax Hospital is equipped and staffed to provide the latest and most comprehensive care available for chronic heartburn, Barrett's esophagus and other GI complications.

Using minimally invasive outpatient procedures, such as esophageal monitoring and radiofrequency ablation, our advanced endoscopists accurately diagnose and treat Barrett's esophagus with minimal discomfort, easy recovery and extremely high success rates.
